Carel Versteegh, die eens vanwege zijn rijkdom de 'koffiekoning van Java' was genoemd, kon zijn leningen niet meer aflossen. Tevergeefs had hij op een goede koffie-oogst gerekend. Nu moest een aantal van zijn ondernemingen verkocht worden. 'Soekamangli' kon behouden worden, maar er diende ernstig bezuinigd worden. Dure kostscholen waren er niet meer bij.
